Coleus is a well known and popular garden plant that boasts gorgeous coloured foliage. With its wide range of colors and patterns, coleus plants can add a stunning visual appeal to any garden. They can also be successfully grown as houseplants.

Here are some key factors to consider when growing coleus in our Manitoba climate:

Coleus plants thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. In Manitoba, where the climate can be quite variable, it is best to provide them with morning sun and afternoon shade. This will protect the plants from scorching heat and ensure optimal growth. The exception to this are the Premium Sun varieties and Main Street varieties that will tolerate sun.

Coleus plants prefer warm temperatures between 70-85°F (21-29°C). However, they can take slightly cooler temperatures as well. In Manitoba, it is important to protect the plants from frost, as they are not frost-tolerant. A summer that has warm night time temperatures will see your coleus do well. When we have cool summer nights they will struggle.

Well-draining soil is essential for coleus plants. They prefer a soil mix that is rich in organic matter and retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Regular watering is important to keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering as it can lead to root rot, especially when temperatures are on the cool side.

Providing coleus plants with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season or a 3-4 month slow release fertilizer at the beginning of the season. will help promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging for proper application.

To encourage bushier growth and prevent stretching, it is recommended to pinch back the tips of the coleus plants regularly. This will promote branching and result in a fuller, more compact plant.

Coleus plants can occasionally be affected by aphids, mealybugs, or fungal issues. Regularly inspect your plants for any signs of infestation or disease, and take appropriate measures to control them if necessary.

Coleus do well in either containers or in garden beds. Whether you choose to grow them in containers or in the ground, their vibrant foliage will surely enhance the visual appeal of your surroundings.
