General Information:
Both Oriental Poppies and Icelandic Poppies thrive in full sun, so it is important to select a location in your garden that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. These flowers also prefer well-drained soil, so make sure to choose a spot with good drainage.
Before planting your Poppies, it is essential to prepare the soil properly. Start by removing any weeds or grass from the planting area. Then, loosen the soil with a garden fork or tiller to a depth of about 12 inches. Add organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve the soil's fertility and drainage.
After planting, water the plants thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged, during the growing season. Applying a layer of organic mulch around the plants will help conserve moisture and suppress weed growth.
Poppies are generally low-maintenance plants, but they can benefit from a light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flower production. Deadhead the faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming and remove any diseased or damaged foliage promptly.
Poppy blooms typically appear in late spring or early summer and last for several weeks. Cut the flowers for bouquets or leave them in the garden to enjoy their beauty.
