Watermelons love heat, sunshine and well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Before planting, it is important to amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to provide the necessary nutrients for the plants.

Watermelon seeds can be directly sown into the soil but in our cooler northern climate it is preferable to use started plants to get a head start on our short summer season. When planting, it is recommended to space the transplants in groups of 3-4 about 2 to 3 feet apart to allow for proper growth and airflow. Choose a spot in the garden that is in full sun and gather the most heat.

Watermelons are heavy feeders and require regular watering throughout their growth cycle. Adequate irrigation is crucial, especially during hot and dry periods. It is important to water deeply and consistently, ensuring that the soil is evenly moist but not waterlogged.

Harvesting watermelons at the right time is crucial for optimal flavor and sweetness. The signs of a ripe watermelon include a dull skin color, a yellow or cream-colored underside, and a hollow sound when tapped. It is recommended to cut the watermelon from the vine, leaving a short stem attached.

Watermelons are a nutritious fruit, containing about 92% water and high levels of vitamins A and C. They are also a good source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that gives watermelon its vibrant red color.
